Juvenile sentence reduction hearing postponed

The Connecticut Sentencing Commission hearing that had been planned for Nov. 8 has been postponed until later this month, due to lingering effects of the recent bad weather in some areas of the state.
The hearing will be Thursday, Nov. 29 at noon in Room 2C of the Legislative Office Building, 300 Capitol Ave., in Hartford.
Sign-up for the hearing will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at 9:30 a.m., and will take place at the LOB 1st floor atrium. Speaker order will be decided by a lottery system.
At a meeting on Dec. 20, the commission will consider a draft proposal, "to allow a person sentenced to a lengthy term of imprisonment for a crime committed when the person was under 18 to seek release under parole supervision after serving a substantial portion of the sentence."

Hurricane Sandy relief drive planned


Jenny Golfin of the Register Citizen and Daniela Forte of the Litchfield County Times are collecting donations for those impacted by Hurricane Sandy in Connecticut.
Items being collected are: bottled water, non-perishable food items, blankets, toiletries, pillows, personal hygiene items, diapers, batteries, old working phone chargers (car and home), clothing, and gift cards.
Daniela and Jenny will be collecting donations at the Register Citizen offices at 59 Field St., Torrington, CT from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
They will be distributing the donations in Milford on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the commuter lot near Exit 55B (Northbound off the Merritt Parkway) and Exit 55 (Southbound off the Merrit Parkway) where people may pick-up donated items. For those people wishing to donate that are outside of Litchfield County they will also accept donations at that time which will immediately be given out to those in need.

Public hearing planned on juvenile offender legislation

HARTFORD -  The Connecticut Sentencing Commission is hosting a public hearing on Thursday, Nov. 8 at the Legislative Office Building on the topic of juvenile sentence reduction. 
The hearing will be at 300 Capitol Avenue, Room 2D at 10 a.m. Anyone interested in speaking should register by 9:30 a.m.
At a meeting on Dec. 20, the commission will consider a draft proposal, "to allow a person sentenced to a lengthy term of imprisonment for a crime committed when the person was under 18 to seek release under parole supervision after serving a substantial portion of the sentence."

Crime victims invited to informational session on legislative proposals

From an announcement from the Office of the State Victim Advocate:
HARTFORD - The Connecticut Sentencing Commission, a permanent commission established to review on an ongoing basis criminal justice and sentencing policies and laws of this State, will host a public hearing on Thursday, Nov. 8 at the Legislative Office Building to receive public comment on its legislative proposals for changes to parole review.
The Commission’s legislative proposals may affect the eligibility for release of an offender who was under the age of 18 at the time a crime was committed and are in response to two recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions.
The public hearing will be an opportunity for crime victims and others to attend and participate by offering their views and opinions on these prospective legislative changes.
The state Office of the Victim Advocate will host an informational session on Wednesday, Nov. 7
at 6:30 p.m. at the Hartford Public Library, downtown branch, at 500 Main St., Hartford, for crime victims and their supporters.According to State Victim Advocate Michelle Cruz, the goal of the informational session is to  educate crime victims and others on the recent Supreme Court decisions, the prospective legislative changes for parole eligibility of offenders who were under 18 at the time a crime was committed, and how to be heard at the upcoming public hearing concerning these issues.

Support group to help families impacted by homicide

NEW HAVEN - Survivors of Homicide Inc. announced that it will be forming a second support group, which will meet n New Haven, starting on Thursday, Nov. 15.
The group will meet on the third Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the New Haven Adult Education Center, located at 580 Ella Grasso Boulevard. The group meets in the library on the first floor.
