American Red Cross seeks blood donations

FARMINGTON - The American Red Cross needs blood donors of all blood types to ensure an adequate blood supply through the fall.
Thanks to donors who answered the call during an emergency appeal for donations earlier this summer, the blood supply deficit was reduced and temporarily stopped the decline in donations. However, as the summer ends, there continues to be a need for all blood types, according to the organization.
“We cannot thank enough the blood donors who have already rolled up a sleeve to help rebuild the blood supply and ensure patients have the blood products they need,” said Donna M. Morrissey, Director of Communications, American Red Cross – Northeast Division.  “Now that autumn is here and we are getting back into our regular routines, we encourage all eligible donors to make a donation appointment and help spread the word about the need for blood by inviting family and friends to do the same.”
Thousands of blood donations are needed daily to meet the needs of accident victims, cancer patients, and children with blood disorders.  Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood.  Every blood donation can help save up to three lives.
Call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information.  Individuals who are 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
